Guidelines

  1. The competition will take place Sunday, October 14 at 6pm.
  2. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at NAU.
  3. Past winners are ineligible.
  4. Applications are due Friday, September 14, 2007 by 5pm in the Instrumental Office (rm180).
  5. Applicants must be studying with an NAU music faculty member and have the instructor’s approval to enter the competition.
  6. The duration of the chosen piece is not to exceed 25 minutes, no exceptions.
  7. Works performed by the NAU Symphony since September 2003 are ineligible (see below)
  8. The work must have a published score and orchestral parts.
  9. Unusually difficult works must be confirmed with the Director of Orchestras.
  10. Memorization is mandatory. In special cases, individual exceptions must be determined by a group of faculty representing the class of instrument or voice. Students requesting a memorization waiver must get signatures of three faculty members from the appropriate performance area.
  11. Finalists for the October 14, 2007 competition will be chosen from preliminary auditions held by area faculty on or before October 8, 2007.
  12. Each area (Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion, Strings, Voice and Piano) will name a maximum of two (2) finalists and one (1) alternate.
  13. The finalists must submit any performance-time requests to Inga Zornes at orchestra@nau.edu by 5pm on Tuesday, October 9th, 2007. No time requests will be taken after this date. We will do our best to honor your requests, however, they cannot be guaranteed.  Finalists are encouraged to consult with their accompanists about performance times.
  14. Each finalist will furnish the adjudicating committee with three copies of the music to be performed.
  15.  The committee will choose up to three unranked winners and two alternates.
  16. The decision of the jury is final.
  17. Winners must be available to perform on the November 11th, March 2nd or May 4th Symphony Orchestra Concerts. They must be able to rehearse during the orchestra’s MWF 3:30-5:30pm rehearsal time.
