Symphony Orchestra
Description
The Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to providing the finest musical and educational opportunities for qualified individuals from the NAU student body interested in the study and performance of orchestral music. Students in this 75-member ensemble perform 4-6 concerts per year, and will develop a thorough working knowledge relevant to the performance practice of standard orchestral repertoire ranging from music of the baroque through the contemporary music of our time. In past years, performances have included major works by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Shostakovich, Sibelius, Beethoven, Ravel, Smetana, Wagner, and others.
The Symphony Orchestra is thoroughly committed to preparing students for professional careers in the field of music in today’s complex society of ever-changing cultural and musical tastes. The Symphony Orchestra also strives to educate and develop new audiences for the unique experience of live symphonic music, in addition to supporting the life and work of Northern Arizona University and the surrounding Flagstaff community.

Chamber Orchestra
Description
The Chamber Orchestra is dedicated to the performance of repertoire of an intimate character. The select members of the ensemble are afforded the opportunity to perform in a true chamber setting where the emphasis is on active collaboration and shared leadership. Each semester the performance repertoire and numerous readings focus on chamber music from all time periods, with specific emphasis on the stylistic performance practice of the period. The Chamber Orchestra performs 1-3 concerts per semester, often combining with a small wind and percussion section to explore the vast quantity of chamber ensemble literature.
